Team Building Activities – Are they just for fun?
Do you ever feel Rip Van Winkle – waking up after 100 years (or so it seems) working at the same job, company, or industry? You look around and realise that everyone is getting younger except you. Or that you planned on being gone years earlier but find you are still doing something you don’t want to be doing because it is expected, you need the money, you believe you should wait until you retire to do what you really want to do, or insert your own reason. It does not matter what the reason is, you are still in the same place that you don’t want to be in, and you have just woken up to that fact.
Now what? When you have your Big Dream and your Big Why, make a plan. Start where you are. You don’t have to quit your day job to start your dream or calling. You could fill your spare time and leisure hours creating your new gig. Befriend time instead of fighting it. If you do, you will find more time than you believe you have. Yes, we all have the same 24 hours a day, but how you spend your time really does matter.
If you don’t believe you have spare time, track how you spend your time every day for a week. How much time do you spend watch TV, working, commuting, on social media, eating, sleeping, exercising, socializing? Of that time, determine where can you find time in the day to re-prioritize and put towards building your dream. Then get going on your dream work.
Here are 4 simple time stretching ideas:
- Get up 20 minutes earlier: maybe the only quiet time you get is before anyone else in the family is awake. Or maybe you are a morning person and that is when you do your best work. If you can set the alarm clock for 20 minutes earlier, do your dream work first thing in the morning!
- Go to bed 20 minutes later: If the thought of getting up earlier is a big no, consider going to bed 20 minutes later. Do your dream work before you sleep.
- Watch less TV or no TV: When I enrolled in grad school while working a fulltime job, I needed to find at least 10 hours a week to do the school work. One of the first things I did was stop watching TV 5 days a week, and voila – I had 10 hours freed up! P.S. 18 years later I barely watch any TV.
- Cut your social media time in half: Be honest and calculate how much time you spend on social media. If you cut that time in half, would you be able to free up multiple hours in your week?
That actual amount of time you spend pursuing your dream is less important than doing it consistently. If you do some action towards your dream for 20 minutes a day, every day, for a year, you have dedicated 7300 minutes or 121 hours to it! Imagine what you can accomplish in that time. Taking inspired actions consistently will help you turn your dream into a reality. So make time to tune out distractions so you and tune in to your dreams.
