What Is Life Transition Coaching?

“I am not what has happened to me, I am what I choose to become” – Carl Jung

Are you beginning or ending a job or relationship? Are you moving to a new home or moving into a whole new phase in your life? If so, you are in a life transition. We all go through many transitions throughout our lives. Some we welcome and some we resist.

The key to dealing with any transition is to approach it from a highly conscious perspective, which will increase your comfort level with change and uncertainty, and turn resistance or fear into excitement and the energy to move forward. If you are in transition or about to choose on a change in your life, transition coaching can help you to accomplish it.

What is Transition?

In a book by William Bridges titled, “Transitions: Making Sense of Life’s Changes,” he creates a transition model that focuses on the three phases of transition: 1) an ending, 2) a neutral zone, 3) a new beginning. He further differentiates transitions from change. In his theory, change happens to individuals, which can cause resistant behaviors; whereas transition is the process individuals experience as they go through a change.

To achieve any transformation, we go through transition. To move through the transition successfully, we need to deal with the process of letting go of old identities, staying in the uncertainty of who we are becoming, and then embracing a new identity.

At some point in our lives, we go through major transitions that cause us to move from one stage in life to another. What are some examples of bigger transitions that may occur in your life?

  • getting married
  • preparing to have a new child
  • becoming an empty nester
  • finishing college
  • starting a new job
  • moving to a new home
  • a new promotion at work
  • losing a spouse
  • losing a job
  • receiving a health diagnosis
  • retirement

Questions that you may ask yourself if you are considering making transitions in your life:

  1. Who am I and who do I want to be?
  2. Am I doing what I am passionate about?
  3. Five years from now, where would my life be?
  4. Am I joyful each day with what I do?
  5. What keeps me from doing what I want?

If you are going through a transition you may ask yourself:

  1. Am I on the right track?
  2. Are there any self-improvements I should make?
  3. Am I achieving my goals, or I am not moving forward?
  4. How am I affected by the people around me?
  5. Do I feel focused or overwhelmed?

Life transition coaching is all about having a coach as you go through a change. It connects the gap from where you are to where you want to be. Transition is an action and having a coach will enable you to gain positive results.
